National Carers Week is about recognising and celebrating the outstanding contribution unpaid carers make to our nation.

Join us for a series of virtual talks about caring for a family member, friend or neighbour.

Caring For An Older Person

Monday 12 October, 10:30am - 12:00pm, online via Zoom

Sue Pieters Hawke will reflect on her journey as a carer for her parents Hazel Hawke and Bob Hawke. Prof. Dimity Pond, GP, has strategies for getting the most out of a Doctor’s appointment including those uncomfortable conversations about dementia and cognitive impairment. Prof. Susan Kurrle, Geriatrician, will talk about frailty and care of an older person.

Resilience

Tuesday 13 October, 10:30am - 12:00pm, online via Zoom

Petrea King will share some tools and strategies to help carers care for themselves, so they may in turn care for others. Petrea will help you maintain hope, humour and optimism when living with and caring for a family member.

Let's Talk About Male Carers

Wednesday 14 October, 10:30am - 12:00pm, online via Zoom

Michael Riley, Relationships Australia NSW, will provide insight into the needs of men who provide carer for a loved one. Michael has extensive experience in working with men and families facing complex issues.

Michael is a Relationships Australia NSW Team Leader and an experienced Counsellor, Family and Couples Therapist, a licensed Family Dispute Resolution Practitioner (FDRP), Men's Behaviour Change Specialist and Education Consultant.

Better Outcomes For People With An Intellectual Disability

Thursday 15 October, 10:30am - 12:00pm, online via Zoom

Margaret Meaker will talk about a parent's journey in creating changes and lifelong learning. Mr Vince Ponzio is Director, Intellectual Disability Mental Health (IDMH), Mental Health Branch, NSW Ministry of Health. His role helps to provide state-wide leadership in the area of IDMH with a view to building the capacity of mental health services to better meet the needs of people with intellectual disability and their families.

Trauma, Crisis Management and Care

Friday 16 October, 10:30am - 12:00pm, online via Zoom

Tarja Malone, Carer Counsellor – Carers Gateway, Yourside, is a Social Worker who has worked in clinical and therapeutic settings with children, youth, parents and adults in areas of complex trauma and mental health.
