Australian research has shown that building up the literacy skills of children before they start school is fundamental to their academic success, and actively encourages them to develop a love of learning.
1,000 Books Before School is a program aimed at pre-schoolers to help them develop their literacy skills, encourage a daily reading habit, engage children with language, and to help them understand themselves and others.
Children who participate in this program will receive a special tote bag after they have finished 100 books, and for every 100 books after that they collect a sticker to decorate their bag with, until they reach 1,000 books.
Register at the library or online using the Beanstack app, which will allow caregivers to log the books you read. Each time you reach a milestone, bring your email confirmation, or reading log, into Lane Cove or Greenwich Library to receive a sticker for your bag.
All books count towards the final total, including books borrowed from the library, e-books read online, audio books, books listened to at storytime, or shared by family and friends.
The program finishes once a child has read 1,000 books or begins kindergarten. Each child can only complete the program once.
