Overview

In early 2014 Council commenced the development of an 'Age-Friendly Lane Cove Strategy' in accordance with the requirements of the World Health Organisations (WHO) Global Age-Friendly Cities and Communities Project.  Consultants were engaged to hold consultations with the community, develop a baseline assessment of the age-friendliness of Lane Cove and an action plan to address the suggestions for improvement.

Consultations began in February 2014.  Ten (10) focus groups and four (4) general community forums were conducted and surveys, either online or by paper, were received from 275 people. A total of 450 people provided their views on the age-friendliness of Lane Cove. The findings have been presented in a Baseline Assessment under each of the eight domains or topic areas:-

  • Outdoor spaces;
  • Streets and buildings;
  • Transport;
  • Housing;
  • Respect and social inclusion;
  • Social participation;
  • Communication and information;
  • Civic participation; and
  • Community support and health services.

Goals for each domain and the strategies and actions to achieve them were extrapolated from the Baseline Assessment to form the 'Strategy for an Age-Friendly Lane Cove, 2014-2017, Draft Action Plan'.

Council was welcomed as a member into the WHO Global Network of Age Friendly Cities and Communities in June 2014 and the Draft Action Plan completed in September 2014.  The actions from the Draft Action Plan have been informing the work of the newly established the Lane Cove Age-Friendly Advisory Committee which has been meeting regularly since 23 October 2014.

Council is now undertaking consultation to determine the communities views on the 'Strategy for an Age-Friendly Lane Cove, 2014-2017, Draft Action Plan' dated September 2014. Comments received will assist Council in finalising the 'Strategy for an Age-Friendly Lane Cove: 2014-2017 Action Plan' prior to Council adoption.
