Overview

Under the new Boarding Houses Act 2012, Council is required to undertake mandatory inspections of boarding houses located in the Lane Cove Local Government Area (LGA) for issues relating to fire safety and environmental health. 

Council proposes to develop a Boarding House Register listing all boarding houses within the LGA. A Boarding House Inspection Program will then be undertaken which involves an initial inspection by 30 June 2014 and a further inspection if the boarding house changes owners.

The inspections will consider issues such as:-

  • Permitted use;
  • Fire safety;
  • Light and ventilation;
  • Kitchen facilities;
  • General cleanliness;
  • Bedding;
  • Vermin;
  • Food preparation; and
  • Minimum room size.

Fees

Boarding House owners will be given written notice prior to the inspection and must pay an inspection fee prior to the inspection taking place.

Initial boarding house inspection $710.00
Inspection where boarding house has changed proprietors $710.00

The proposed fees for these inspections are derived from Councils Fees and Charges 2013 / 2014 for a fire safety inspection ($500.00) and the hourly investigation fee for Council's Environmental Health Officer ($210.00). Both Council’s Building Surveyor and Environmental Health Officer will be required to attend inspections.
