At the Ordinary Council meeting in February 2014 Council resolved to apply for grant funding under the Elsa Dixon Aboriginal Employment Program to facilitate the research and develop a Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP).
A Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) is a business plan that uses a holistic approach to create meaningful relationships and sustainable opportunities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander residents. Implementing a RAP plays an important role in employing the sensitive and respectful processes that must be observed when working towards reconciliation.
Council was notified that the grant application was successful in September 2014 and an Aboriginal Community Development Officer (ACDO) was employed to develop the RAP in December 2014. Council worked closely with Reconciliation Australia (the organisation responsible for reviewing and endorsing all plans prior to adoption) to finalise the Draft Lane Cove Innovate Reconciliation Action Plan, which was presented to Council on 19 September 2016 and adopted for the purpose of public exhibition.
Council is currently consulting with the community on the Draft Lane Cove Innovate Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) which aims to create meaningful relationships and sustainable opportunities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander stakeholders through developing and implementing programs for cultural learning, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander employment and supplier diversity.
Whilst the community will benefit from the implementation of this plan, the Draft RAP is for primarily for Council use. It provides a framework for Council to realise our vision for reconciliation and publically formalises Council's contributions to reconciliation by embedding cultural change within the organisation.
A further report addressing any submissions received during the consultation period will be prepared for consideration by Council at its meeting of 15 May 2017.
