About 500 people turned out to support the unveiling of a Reconciliation
Memorial Plaque in Cameraygal Country at Woodford Bay, Longueville, on
Saturday, 7 February, 2004.
The Plaque reads:
“Memorial Plaque to honour and recognise the Cameraygal people who
defended their Country by resisting British invasion”
The plaque and ceremony were a co-operative venture of Lane Cove Council,
the Metropolitan Local Aboriginal Land Council, Lane Cove Residents for
Reconciliation and the Lane Cove Historical Society. The Governor of NSW,
Her Excellency Professor Marie Bashir AC, and Chairperson of the Metropolitan
Local Aboriginal Land Council, Robert Welsh, unveiled the plaque.
The Welcome to Country address was delivered by Charles (Chicka) Madden,
an Eora Elder, Metropolitan Local Aboriginal Land Council.
In attendance at the ceremony were several Aboriginal elders, Lane Cove
Mayor John May who gave an address, Convenor of Lane Cove Residents for
Reconciliation Kerry McKenzie who gave the closing address, Senator Aden
Ridgeway, Lane Cove MP Anthony Roberts, Lane Cove Council General Manager
Peter Brown and Councillors Stephen Bowers, Frances Vissel, Rod Tudge,
Fay Worner and Kay Freedman. Apologies received by Crs Mary Rawlings and
Ian Longbottom.
There were also representatives from many local faith groups, including
Muslim, Jewish, Buddhist, Christian and Baha‘i groups, who provided
the refreshments. Support was also provided by local scouts, Willoughby/Lane
Cove SES and several Lane Cove businesses including Len Wallis Audio Lane
Cove, Kennards Hire in Artarmon, Sea of Hands ANTaR and St John Ambulance.
