Lane Cove Council has raised its concerns with Viva following reports of a recent oil spill at its Depot in Greenwich.
On 30 December 2016 an unidentified quantity of oil was spilt within the Depot and although the spill was contained within the bund, a portion of the fuel then subsequently leaked through into the Bay.
Council has requested access to the incident report and Viva's procedures to help ensure lessons learnt from this occasion are incorporated into future practices. In particular Council would like to ensure Viva's commitment to providing timely, formal notification to Council regarding any incidents given its proximity to local residences and public facilities. Ongoing updates on the progress of any investigations would also assist Council in helping to keep a concerned community informed.
To date Council has met with Viva representatives and has also arranged for follow-up testing to water quality at Greenwich Baths to ensure no residual impacts. Council will shortly call for a briefing by representatives from Viva and the EPA to discuss the incident further.
It is understood that until such time as a report is finalised by the EPA the most up to date information that can be provided to the Lane Cove community is a copy of the community information updates provided by Viva. These appear below:
Council will be seeking to receive an update for the community this week.
