Council Water Savings

Lane Cove Council's committment to reducing water consumption is outlined it its Water Savings Action Plan.

The plan includes a water usage audit of Council's top ten water consuming sites and identifies measures to reduce water consumption. The Water Savings Action Plan will guide water savings actions undertaken by Council.

Council has undertaken an extensive program to install rainwater tanks at Council owned facilities. Rainwater tank installations include:

  • Five rainwater tanks with a total tank capacity of 31 270 L at Council's Administration Centre. The tanks provide water for irrigation and to flush toilets.
  • Eleven rainwater tanks with a total tank capacity of 28 830 L at Kindy Cove Childcare Centre, Lane Cove Occasional Childcare and Birrahlee Kindergarten. The tanks provide water for water play, irrigation, washing machines and flushing toilets.
  • Additional rainwater tanks at the new Girl Guide's Hall.

In addition to these tanks, Council plans to install rainwater tanks at Tantallon Oval and Kingsford Smith Oval during early 2009.

Council has saved over five Olympic-length swimming pools of water a year by using water more efficiently at Lane Cove Aquatic and Leisure Centre. Water efficiency measures include:

  • the installation of AAA-rated shower heads with a flow rate of 9 litres per minute;
  • the installation of dual flush tiolets which each save 7 litres of water per flush; and
  • the installation of a pool blanket to reduce evaporation from the outdoor pool.

Lane Cove Council has partnered with the NSW Government in promoting water saving initiatives through the Water for Life program.
