All events are free unless otherwise noted. Some events listed are being run by other Councils, booking contact numbers are supplied below.

JULY

Introduction to Organic Vege Gardening

This course aims to introduce organic techniques for community gardeners and home gardeners. Topics discussed include organic pest control and sourcing non-hybrid seeds.

Bush Secrets nature walk - BOOKED OUT

How did the local Aboriginal Cameraygal people find food, medicines and shelter in the environment? Join our Aboriginal guide and discover ancient secrets hidden in our local bushland! ! Great school holiday activity for families. Suitable for ages 7yrs and up.

AUGUST

National Tree Day

Come down to Blackman Park and enjoy a tree planting morning with the family. Help plant shrubs and groundcovers to improve the small bird habitat near the Lane Cove River.

Sunday 2 August from 9am

Finish time approximately 11am

Please bring your own gloves and water.

Blackman Park, meet at the end of Lloyd Rees Drive, Lane Cove West.

Attracting Frogs to your backyard

From seasonally wet and dry swales to large pools, our local frogs all have unique species-specific habitat and breeding area requirements. At this practical session we will be designing and building frog bogs and shelters for suburban backyards.

SEPTEMBER

Growing Native Plants from Cuttings

Some native plants can be tricky to grow and propagation from cuttings can sometimes be the only successful method! Learn this technique to grow beautiful species such as Grevillea, Mint Bush, Hibbertia, Blueberry Ash and more!

Saltmarsh Surprise Bushwalk

Threatened Species Day celebrations!

Did you know that saltmarshes along the Lane Cove River are endangered? Marine ecologist Dr Peter Freewater will take you on a bushwalk near Blackman Park to explore the fascinating and undervalued world of saltmarsh animals and plants. Discover how these spaces are vital for wading birds and many fish species, and how climate change threatens the future of this unique environment. What does their future hold?

Chooks in Your Backyard

Cage, barn, antibiotic free, Omega Plus or Free Range…which is the best egg?  Definitely the ones you collected from the backyard.  This workshop will cover the pros and cons of chook keeping, how to keep healthy chooks, chook breeds, chook housing and regulations for keeping chooks.

Discovery Boat Trip on the Lane Cove River

BOOKED OUT

Get a new perspective of your local river foreshore. Join local experts on a relaxing cruise and find out more about the natural, cultural and built heritage of the Lane Cove River and estuary. Very popular, so book in quick!

Cost: $20 p.p. (adults), $18 seniors/pensioners, $12 children under 12 years. Includes light refreshments and a map.
