Natural Environment

Bush regeneration at Gore Creek Reserve, Stage 2 of 6 Year Program

This program aims to eradicate the South American vine Pithecoctenium cynanchoides and other noxious weeds from Gore Creek Reserve. The area will be revegetated with native plant stock.

Management of Shared Open Space – Animals

This project aims to reduce pollution and damage to sensitive environments by encouraging the control of pets through clear signposting of leash-free, on-leash & prohibited areas for dogs and the installation of dog friendly facilities (e.g. dog-litter bins).

Develop a Plan of Management for Blackman Park

This program arises from the Blackman Park Masterplan and seeks to establish a framework for Council to manage the linkages between the sporting ovals, bushland and river.

Conduct macro invertebrate monitoring, Stage 2 of 7 Year Program

The objective of the project is to participate in a regional biological monitoring program to assess environmental quality in the creeks in the Northern Sydney area.

Undertake GIS mapping of natural attributes

The objective of the project is to collect native vegetation data within the LGA through the means of field surveying, aerial photography, and historical records.  Then with that data produce detailed GIS overlays and detailed report. 

Backyard Wildlife Habitat Program, Stage 2 of 7 Year Program

This project consists of community workshops and one-on-one consultations, to encourage residents to gain a clear appreciation of their surrounding environments, while promoting and strengthening identified wildlife corridors.

Feral Animal Control, Stage 2 of 7 Year Program

The purpose of this project is to reduce the incidence of feral animals throughout Lane Cove. This will encourage the return of native fauna to the Lane Cove Valley. The program is focused on three species – foxes, rabbits and myna birds.

The aim of this project is to provide ongoing support for the day-to-day running of Council’s Bushcare Program. This includes the provision of tools and training for Bushcare volunteers.

Climate Change

GreenFleet – 100% Abatement for Council’s Fleet

The aim of this project is to offset the greenhouse gas emissions associated with the operation of Council’s fleet. Greenfleet on behalf of Council will plant 17 trees (per vehicle) that will not only absorb the fleet’s greenhouse emissions, but will also help to tackle salinity, improve water quality and provide essential habitat for native species.

Use 100% GreenPower for Council’s Administration Centre

Council will continue to purchase 100% GreenPower for the needs of the Council Administration Building, Community Centre, Library and Lane Cove Plaza.

Implement Actions from Greenhouse Action Plan

As a participant in the Cities for Climate Protection program, Council is preparing a Greenhouse Action Plan which outlines actions we will take to meet our commitment of a 50% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2017. The purpose of this project is to implement actions identified in (the planning stages of) this plan so that Council can work towards achieving this goal.

Library Sustainability Initiatives

This program seeks to improve the sustainability of the new library through improved insulation, glazing, building control and HVAC systems.

Green Building Advice Service

This program seeks to improve the sustainability of local development by providing a green building advice service to residents prior to lodgement of a DA.

Water Conservation and Management

Residential Rainwater Tank Rebate Scheme

The aim of this project is to reduce the financial barriers to the installation of rainwater tanks in residential buildings. Lane Cove residents are offered a rebate in addition to that provided by Sydney Water/DECC for the installation of a tank greater than 2000L and connection to a toilet and/or washing machine.

Rainwater Capture for Blackman Park – Stage 1

This project entails the design and construction of rainwater harvesting system for irrigation of Blackman Park.

Implement Actions from Water Savings Action Plans

In 2006 Lane Cove Council completed a Water Savings Action Plan (WSAP). This involved an audit of Council’s top ten water consuming sites to identify opportunities for water saving. Priority actions from the WSAP will be implemented.

Village Graffiti Reduction Program

Lane Cove, like many areas of Sydney, has a graffiti problem. In order to combat this Council will instigate a graffiti reduction program. A clean up team will be given authorisation from Council and property owners for the immediate removal of graffiti and repainting of affected areas.

Lane Cove Plaza Master Plan

The Village Public Domain Master Plan is to provide a blueprint for the renovation of Lane Cove Plaza to coincide with the opening of the new Woolworths store in late 2009.

Lane Cove Retail Sustainability Strategy Implementation

A regular neighbourhood workshop series would be held to promote sustainable living through community education. Workshops will help residents reduce their environmental impact by making simple changes at home, from saving energy and water to cutting down on waste.
