Community Consultation - Packaging recovery
The Environment Protection and Heritage Council has agreed to develop a Consultation Regulation Impact Statement (RIS) on national measures to increase packaging recovery and to decrease packaging litter.
The Consultation RIS examines four options, including container deposit schemes (CDS), an advance disposal fee, industry-run schemes and a nationally consistent government initiative.
This Consultation RIS does not indicate a preferred option and seeks community feedback on all aspects of the analysis and options before agreeing on an appropriate course of action.

Fridge Buyback program extended
The NSW government is extending Fridge Buyback for another year because the program, which pays householders to get rid of their second fridge, is so successful at saving energy and helping households cut their bills.
Fridge Buyback pays householders $35 to have the second fridge collected and taken away from their homes. Every fridge taken out of circulation saves one tonne of carbon pollution a year and about $225 on annual electricity bills.
Every fridge is professionally degassed and the metals recycled, so there are
additional environmental benefits.
Fridges must be working second fridges in regular use, 250 litres or more in size and at least 10 years old. Conditions apply.
Fridge Buyback has been funded through the NSW Climate Change Fund.
To participate, call Fridge Buyback toll free on 1800 708 401 or see: www.fridgebuyback.com.au
