What is Sustainability?
Sustainability is about protecting the natural environment and enriching the living environment by promoting ecological, economic and social sustainability for the benefit of current and future generations. It is about decision-making and strategic planning by Council and the community to integrate a balance of these needs.
Sustainable Community Lane Cove
Imagine a more sustainable Lane Cove where every household is composting its rubbish, planting natives in their gardens, saying no to using plastic bags and excess packaging and choosing eco-friendly products and housing design.
This is the kind of vision underpinning Council's Sustainability Action Plan for Lane Cove.
The Sustainability Action Plan provides a framework by identifying key goals, and actions that must be taken when moving towards sustainability. It is about influencing performance, behaviours, attitudes and actions – at a Council, community, household and personal level – by encouraging local action on global issues.
The 10-year plan outlines a number of possible initiatives including a Council nursery and demonstration community garden to encourage residents to plant natives and water efficient gardens.
These initiatives will put the Lane Cove community well on its way to joining a global effort towards more sustainable local communities.
