Expressing Our Culture: A Cultural Plan for Lane Cove

Lane Cove Cultural Action Plan sets the direction for future community cultural development projects in Lane Cove for the next decade. Culture can be anything that contributes to your quality of life, sense of place, feeling of community and local identity. A traditional concept of culture includes the arts such as music, art, dance and drama. Culture can also include other activities such as bushwalking, food and cooking, religious and spiritual beliefs, sports, swimming and more.

Lane Cove Council adopted the Plan Expressing Our Culture: A Cultural Action Plan for Lane Cove, on 6th December 2004. Copies are available from the attached links or the Council.

Lane Cove Council was the first Council in NSW to develop a Cultural Plan in line with all the elements of the latest Cultural Planning Guidelines from the NSW Ministry for the Arts www.arts.nsw.gov.au .

Throughout the cultural planning process, 42 consultations were undertaken with approximately 750 community members. A further six week public display period encouraged community feedback that proved to be very positive.

Recommendations for cultural projects included in the Plan are consideration for a new multi-purpose cultural centre, public art, access to a community “what’s on” calendar on Council’s website. In all, there are 162 recommendations to promote culture in Lane Cove.

Former Mayor of Lane Cove, Councillor Ian Longbottom said the plan was a long-term vision of the cultural opportunities, expression, inspiration and aspirations of the Lane Cove community. He explained “we are proud to represent a community that is already culturally vibrant and dynamic. This plan looks at how we, as Council, can over the next ten years meet the developing cultural needs of our community. We want to work closely with community members to support and promote the creative talent and cultural heritage that already exists.”

Having this Cultural Action Plan means Lane Cove will be more likely to secure State and Federal Government funding for local projects in the future.
