Lane Cove Council is committed to supporting an inclusive and welcoming community which values and celebrates diversity in all its forms. This page provides information and links to relevant services for the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender, Intersex and Queer LGBTIQA+ community.

Below is a list of organisations who provide services for the LGBTIQA+ communities

Support organisations

ACON

Gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender health and HIV/AIDS organisation that offers clear information about HIV prevention and support, information and workshops on sexual health, a range of counselling services and a care coordination program for people with complex needs, support services around alcohol and drugs and other essential services around safety and inclusion, domestic and family violence, ageing, health issues and policy and research.

Australian Federation of AIDS Organisations

The Australian Federation of AIDS Organisations (AFAO) is the peak national organisation for Australia's community HIV response, AFAO is recognised both globally and nationally for providing leadership, policy expertise, coordination and support.

Gay and Lesbian Rights Lobby

The Gay and Lesbian Rights Lobby (GLRL) advocates on behalf of lesbians and gay men. They provide referral and educative resources on gay and lesbian rights to the media, policy makers and the community.

OII Australia

Organisation Internationale des Intersexues (OII). OII Australia is a national body by and for people with intersex variations. They promote human rights and bodily autonomy for intersex people, and provide information, education and peer support. 

There goals are to help create a society where intersex bodies are not stigmatised, and where their rights as people are recognised

Positive Life

Positive Life NSW works to promote a positive image of people living with and affected by HIV with the aim of eliminating prejudice, isolation, stigma and discrimination. They provide information and targeted referrals, and advocate to change systems and practices that discriminate against people with HIV, their friends, family and carers in NSW.

The Albion Centre

Provides HIV and hepatitis C clinical treatment and counselling

Australian Lesbian Medical Association

The Australian Lesbian Medical Association (ALMA) was founded in 1999 for lesbian doctors, lesbian medical students and their partners.  It provides a supportive network to its members through advocacy, mentoring and social activities.

Bobby Goldsmith Foundation

Bobby Goldsmith Foundation (BGF) is Australia's longest-running HIV charity. Founded in 1984, BGF undertakes a range of support and interventions that address key determinants of poor health outcomes for people living with HIV, i.e. long-term social and economic poverty.

BGF provides direct financial and practical assistance, emotional support, financial counselling, housing, study and employment support to the most vulnerable and disadvantaged people living with HIV.

The Gender Centre

The Gender Centre is committed to developing and providing services and activities, which enhance the ability of people with gender issues to make informed choices. They offer a wide range of services to people with gender issues, their partners, family members and friends in New South Wales. They are an accommodation service and also act as an education, support, training and referral resource centre to other organisations and service providers. The Gender Centre is committed to educating the public and service providers about the needs of people with gender issues.

Inner City Legal Centre

Provides legal services to gay, lesbian and transgender clients from anywhere in NSW.

NSW Police

Chatswood police have support person for the gay and lesbian community – call the Chatswood Police station on 9414 8499 and ask to be put through.

Clinic Sixteen is a publicly funded sexual health service – provides a free and confidential service for the assessment and management of sexually transmissible infections, including screening and treatment for STIs. The clinic provides specialist sexual health Medical, Nursing and Counselling Services.

Support for Young people

Twenty10

Twenty10 work with people across Sydney and New South Wales who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and gender diverse, non-binary, intersex, questioning, queer, asexual and more (LGBTIQA+) people and others of diverse genders and sexualities, their families and communities.

They provide a broad range of specialised services for young people 12-25 including housing, mental health, counselling and social support. They provide social support for adults and for people of all ages they offer telephone support and webchat as the NSW provider for the national QLife project. They also offer inclusivity training and consulting for organisations and service providers across most sectors.

Seniors Rights Service provides free, confidential advocacy, advice, education and legal services to older people in New South Wales

UnitingCare Ageing

UnitingCare Ageing celebrate diversity and welcome all people regardless of lifestyle choices, ethnicity, faith, sexual orientation or gender identity.  They are proud to be accredited with the Rainbow Tick for standing with people from Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Intersex (LGBTI) communities, at every stage of life.

Support for Carers and friends

Carers NSW

Support for LGBT carers of people with chronic conditions, terminal illness or who are frail.

PFLAG

Peer support for Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG).

Androgen Insensitivity Syndrome Support Group of Australia

Peer support, information and advocacy for intersex people and their families.

Support for those experiencing Domestic Violence

This website is for LGBTIQ people in relationships who are or may be experiencing domestic and family violence. It contains information on what domestic and family violence is, what to do if you are experiencing abuse, suggestions on making a safety plan, and details for some referral options in NSW. It also has information for supporting a friend or family member who is experiencing abuse.

Transgender Anti-Violence Project

Promotes education and awareness about violence against transgender people. Victims can make a report online or over the phone.

Safe Relationships Project

Free domestic violence court help for people in same-sex relationships, transgender, transsexual and intersex people.

Support for Alcohol and other drugs

Rainbow Recovery Club

Hosts a range of AA and other 12 step program meetings.

NSW Users & AIDS Association

Peer-based group that promotes harm minimisation for people who use illicit drugs.

Network for those affected by Sexual Abuse

SAMSN

For men coping with the effects of childhood sexual abuse, Survivors And Mates Support Network (SAMSN).

Family and relationship Support

Gay Dads Australia

Support group for gay men who plan to, or already have children.

Rainbow Babies and Kids

A social network for GLBTQI parents.

Gay Married Men's Association

GAMMA provides safe and confidential opportunities for men to discuss and consider issues relating to their sexuality and the relationships in their lives

A social club for gay and bi sexual men and their supporters.

Pride History Group

Pride History is a volunteer community group dedicated to researching, writing about and recording memories of Sydney's LGBTI history. They welcome participation from individuals wishing to tell their story.

Sydney Gay and Lesbian Choir

Sydney Gay and Lesbian Choir is a non-auditioning choir which welcomes members regardless of their sexual identity or musical experience. The choir is open to all – lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered, intersex, queer and our straight friends and families, all united by a love of singing together and striving for performance excellence.

10/40 Matrix

The Ten Forty Matrix website provides a platform for a vigorous loose-limbed organisation of lesbians over forty who relish discussion and debate about the issues we face in work, life, at home, in the arts and politics.  They organise social activities and have a great resources page.
