Military History Talk – Australian Army Nursing Sisters: Our Forgotten Heroes

Thursday 9 March, 6:15pm – 7:45pm, Lane Cove Library

Hear prominent Australian playwright John Misto, BA LL.B discuss the Australian Army Nurses captured by the Japanese in World War II. John wrote the acclaimed play, The Shoe-Horn Sonata.

In February 1942, 65 Australian Army Nurses fled Singapore before it was overrun by the Japanese. 12 nurses died when the Vyner Brooke was sunk off Sumatra and 21 were killed in the Bangka Island Massacre on 16 February 1942.

The other nurses were forced to endure the horrors of captivity at Belalau, regarded as the worst Japanese prison camp. Only 24 nurses returned alive at the end of the war in a shockingly emaciated state. When surviving nurses were liberated, they weighed – at most – 25 kilos.

On their return home the Australian Government refused to allow photos of them until they had fattened up; they were told not to march on ANZAC Day; and many of them were refused army pensions.
