Friedlander Place was named after Alderman Sydney Jack (Syd) Friedlander. Syd is the longest serving alderman on Lane Cove Council. He was first elected in 1961 and completed his final term as Mayor in 1991.
Serving on multiple council, community and sporting committees, the Cumberland County Council and the Local Government Association, Syd Friedlander was honoured by Lane Cove Council in 1985 with the naming of Friedlander Place at St Leonards.
In 1991 he received a Medal of the Order of Australia for nearly 30 years service to local government and a Centenary medal in 2003. He died in Longueville in 2008.
The park is located along Pacific Highway nestled between businesses and tall high-rises.
