Abandoned Vehicles

What is an abandoned vehicle?

An abandoned vehicle is a vehicle that has no registration or a registration that has expired for more than 15 days. The vehicle must be on public land. Vehicles on private land are not classed as abandoned.

How you can check if a vehicle is registered

To save you time completing our online form for reporting an abandoned vehicle, you can quickly check to see if the vehicle is registered or unregistered. It's easy to do, just follow the below links depending on which state the registration plate displays:

If it has expired for more than 15 days, please report an abandoned vehicle online. No registration plate? Report an abandoned vehicle.

Is the vehicle displaying an abandoned vehicle 'sticker'? If it is, you don't need to do anything as Council already has this in hand.

What happens after you have reported an abandoned vehicle?

Once reported, Council Rangers will:

  • Check whether the vehicle is registered and/or stolen.
  • Attempt to contact the last known owner to move the vehicle.
  • Regularly monitor and assess the vehicle until contact is made with the owner.
  • May impound and/or remove the vehicle.

Please note: The process before an abandoned vehicle can be impounded can take 6-8 weeks.
