Usually, each property owner is responsible for maintaining and repairing the fence on their side of the boundary.
When installing a new fence:
- Costs are often shared equally between neighbours (especially if the fence is on a common boundary),
- Generally, Council advises owners to obtain three (3) quotes to ensure fair price and transparency, and
- Neighbours have 10 days to accept or decline proposals or quotes.
If neighbours cannot agree, Councils typically advise escalating the matter to a dispute resolution service or to NSW Civil and Administrative Tribunal (or equivalent Tribunal) for binding decisions. However, it is always best to seek your own independent advice.
