Children's Book Week - Book an Adventure

Every year the Children’s Book Council of Australia empowers children to engage with books from the best Australian authors and illustrators by creating their Book Week short list. The theme for Children’s Book Week this year is Book an Adventure and runs from Saturday 16 August until Saturday 23 August 2025.

To celebrate Children’s Book Week Lane Cove Library will be holding three competitions:

  • Creative Colouring for children up to Year 2.
  • Creative Drawing for children in Years 3 and 4.
  • Creative Writing for children in Year 5 and above.

Entries can be collected from Saturday 5 July and returned to Lane Cove Library, Greenwich Library, St Leonards Library and The Yarn, Hunters Hill until Sunday 10 August. Entries will be on display at Lane Cove Library and winners will be announced on social media on Saturday 16 August.

Terms and Conditions

Entries will be accepted between 9:00am Saturday 5 July and 11:59pm Sunday 10 August.

Entrants must hand in their entries to Lane Cove Library, Greenwich Library, St Leonards Library or The Yarn, Hunters Hill.

Three winners will be selected from each from the following categories:  Category 1: Creative Colouring for children up to Year 2, Category 2: Creative Drawing for children in Years 3 and 4, and Category 3: Creative Writing for children in Year 5 and above, providing they meet the eligibility criteria. Nine Winners in total will each receive a $25 Burns Bay Bookery Gift Voucher. Total prize money = $225.

Each submission is considered one entry. A maximum of 10 entries per individual is permitted.

Participants own the copyright of their submission. In entering the competition, the participant gives Lane Cove Council authority to reproduce, publish, communicate or display the work online (including social media), in presentations, videos, publications and, if selected, for public display at various venues.

Where possible, entrants will be credited with the image of their submission when they are used, however this is not guaranteed.

The winners will be announced on Saturday 16 August on Council's website and/or social media. Maximum of one prize per person.

Reading Challenge - 1000 Books Before School

1000 Books Before School is a self-directed program running throughout the year for preschoolers from age 0 until age 6.

Register at the library to collect a reading log, participate online, or with the Beanstack App, to log the books you read. Each time you reach a milestone, bring your email confirmation, or reading log, into Lane Cove Library, Greenwich Library, St Leonards Library, or The Yarn, Hunters Hill to receive a sticker for your 1000 Books Before School library bag.

All books count towards the final total, including books borrowed from the library, e-books read online, books listened to at Storytime and Baby Bounce, or stories shared with family and friends.
