Problem Waste

The Community Recycling Centre (CRC) is a free drive through and drop off service for household problem waste. Most of the items accepted by the CRC can be used or recycled.

By sorting our waste correctly and using the recycling centre you are able to:

• Keep waste out of landfill.

• Improve recycling rates.

• Save water, energy and other valuable natural resources.

City of Ryde, Hunters Hill, North Sydney and Willoughby Council have joined together with the EPA to establish our CRC. This is a EPA Waste Less Recycle More initiative funded from the waste levy.

Items you can drop off for FREE (maximum of 20 litres or 20kg of each of the following items) :

• Paint (oil and water based) 

• Fire extinguishers

• Motor and other oils (including cooking oil)

• Fluorescent, halogen and LED globes and tubes

• Electronic Waste (eg. computers, TVs, DVD players, CD players, electrical equipment and small electrical appliances).

• DVD's and CD's. Please remove plastic covers on CD's/DVD's and any plastic or cardboard packaging. 

• Household batteries

• Lead Acid Batteries (eg. car & motorbike batteries)

• Smoke detectors

• Mobile phones

• Printer cartridges provided they are one of these brands: Brother, Canon, Dell, Epson, HP, Konica Minolta, Kyocera, Lexmark, Roland, Samsung, Sharp and Toshiba

• X-rays 

• Gas bottles

• Clothing

Safely dispose of potentially hazardous household chemicals at a free Chemical Clean Out event.

You can dispose of a maximum of 20L or 20kgs of the following household chemical items 

• Solvents and household cleaners
• Floor care products
• Ammonia-based cleaners
• Pesticides and herbicides
• Poisons 
• Pool Chemicals
• Hobby Chemicals
• Motor fuels 
• Fluorescent globes and tubes
• Acids and alkalis
• Smoke detectors
• Paint and paint related products
• Gas bottles
• Fire extinguishers
• Car and household batteries
• Motor oils and cooking oils

Storing and transporting unwanted chemicals

Before attending a Chemical Clean Out event, ensure you correctly store and transport the items you wish to recycle

• Never mix chemicals
• Keep chemicals in their original containers
• Ensure all containers are clearly labelled and well-sealed
• Wrap containers holding liquids securely in newspaper and place in a sturdy bag or bucket
• Keep chemicals away from other passengers

Dealing With Asbestos

You can only dispose of asbestos waste at a landfill that’s licensed to accept it. 

Residents should follow the NSW EPA guidelines for dealing with asbestos in and around their home.
