From Friday 2 April to Monday 6 April 2026, double demerit points will apply across New South Wales, with school zones in operation from Thursday 2 April. Additional penalties may apply for offences committed in school zones.

NSW Police Force will be targeting high-risk behaviours during the holiday period, including speeding, illegal mobile phone use, failure to wear seatbelts correctly, and motorcycle helmet offences.

With long weekend travel and school holidays increasing traffic on the roads, drivers are urged to take extra care and abide by the following:

  • Stick to posted speed limits
  • Always wear your seatbelt
  • Avoid using a mobile phone while driving
  • Plan ahead and allow extra travel time
  • Watch for animals, especially at dawn and dusk
  • Take breaks on long trips and avoid driving tired

Planning a long road trip? Tiredness can affect your driving no matter how long or short the journey is. Plan ahead with these tips:

  • Get a good night's sleep
  • Avoid driving after midnight
  • Pull over for a break in a safe place
  • Plan to take regular breaks
  • Arrange to share the driving
  • Take a nap - 20 minutes works best

Drive safely and enjoy the Easter holiday long weekend responsibly!
