E-Bikes
Lane Cove is a busy and vibrant centre shared by pedestrians, cyclists, e-bike riders, families, seniors, people with mobility needs, people with disabilities, and visitors. Everyone has a role to play in keeping our streets and paths safe.
Council supports cycling, active transport, and food delivery services. However, riders must operate safely and lawfully, particularly in high-pedestrian activity areas.
E-bikes are becoming increasingly popular across Lane Cove Local Government Area. They provide a convenient, affordable and environmentally friendly way to travel. As their user continues to grow, it's important that all riders understand the rules and ride safely to help keep our community safe. To ensure everyone can share our roads, paths and public spaces safely, riders should be aware of the following key rules:
- There are 2 types of permitted e-bikes: power - assisted pedal cycles and electrically power- assisted cycles.
- The electric motor must cut off when the bicycle reaches 25km/h.
- Approved helmets must be worn, securely fitted and fastened.
- E-bikes are currently subject to the same rules as bicycle.
- Have a working bell and use it to warn others when approach.
- Keep to the left and give way to pedestrians.

Council's Role
Council is working with delivery companies, riders and NSW Police to improve safety through education, signage and enforcement where necessary. Enforcement action may include fines issued by NSW Police and targeted patrols in high-risk areas, supported by Council education and signage. Illegal e-bike use can be reported to police - your local police station, police assistance line on 131 444, crime stoppers on 1800 333 000 or triple zero 000 if it's an emergency.
